NEW ORLEANS, La. –  The Prairie View A&M men's tennis team advanced in the opening round of the 2017 SWAC Tennis Championships, while the Lady Panthers fell in the opening round Friday. 
 
The men defeated Alabama A&M 4-2, while the Lady Panthers lost to Southern 4-0.
 
In men's doubles action, the Panthers received the point from the No. 2 positon of Freddy Quintero and Zach Suico defeating Joshua Wilson and Jarib Beazer 6-2.  Behind the play of Sergio Avella and Anirudh Yadav, PVAMU defeated Matco A. Monroy Rueda and Carlos Salas at the No. 3 6-2 to take a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs. 
 
Ulrick Boyogueno, Quintero and Suico earned wins in the singles competition.  Boyogueno went the distance stretching a third set at the No. 2, before winning over Carlos Salas 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Quintero at the No. 5 picked his match against Wilson 6-3, 6-1. 
 
At the No. 6 singles Suico had to battle dropping his opening set 6-4, before rallying to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Beazer.
 
The Panthers will return to the courts for the semifinals as they face the No. 1 seed Alabama State University for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.
 
Neharika Rama and Stacy Lackey were able to pick up a set win at the No. 1 doubles position over Southern Stephanie Mbaya and Tanaka Chakanyuka 6-4, before falling in the singles to take a 4-0 loss to the Lady Jaguars.
