EDINBURG, - Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team defeated Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 67-59 on Saturday evening in Edinburg, Texas on the final day of the Battle of the Border Tournament.
"Artavia and Dominique were the difference in tonight's game," said head PVAMU women's basketball coach
Sandy Pugh. " They went from yesterday's game where they were maybe 0-5, to this game where they were dominant. Closing out the game we had some turnovers that we shouldn't have allowed. But Shala got the basketball and she was able to break the pressure. We're a work in progress. We're learning how to play and we're learning how to win. New team, new system. I'm learning me and I'm learning them. I am Really pleased with their effort. The ladies played hard and showed a lot of character down the stretch when we gave up the lead. And they battled back. All in all, great panther effort on both ends of the court."
PVAMU gathered an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter to go into the second quarter with a 17-12 lead over AMCC.
The Lady Panthers continued their dominate performance in the second quarter, completing a 12-0 run with 6:24 left in the period. They were responsible for 25 out of the 38 points scored and went into the half with a 42-25 lead. Junior guard
Dominique Newman led the team with 16 points heading into the half.
Throughout the third quarter, the team managed to keep their lead at a sizable length. They led 56-43 after a made jump shot by senior center
Artavia Ford in the final seconds of the period.
PVAMU slowed down in the fourth quarter, only scoring three points with 3:05 left in the game. However, the team's slow period didn't make much of a difference as they were still able to walk away with the 67-59 victory.
Senior guard
Shala Dobbins put up 21 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Newman followed behind with 20 points, five steals, three assists and one rebound. Ford also chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal.
