SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Prairie View women's and men's tennis teams both fall to Incarnate Word on Sunday at the Marby Tennis Center. The women's team also fell to Texas State in a dual match.
The women's tennis team played two matches, falling first to Texas State 7-0 and then in a close match up with Incarnate Word, dropping a 4-3 match.
After Incarnate Word won the doubles point, the Lady Panthers battled back to win the last three points in singles play. PVAMU got crucial wins at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, but it was not enough as the match was already decided.
PVAMU's
Constanza Aranguiz defeated Sara Djurdjevic at the No. 4 position 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), while
Shaddae Findley picked up a her win over the Cardinal's Alejandra Landalue 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 at the No. 5.
Timara Maxwell rounded up the final point for the Lady Panthers with a win over Rachel Sadiq at the No. 6 by the scores of 6-3, 7-5 to end the match.
In doubles action,
Neharika Rama and Aranguiz won their match at the No. 1 position 6-0. Findley and
Tatiana Ruhl put up the best effort as they fell 6-4. The duo of
Stacy Lackey and Maxwell at the No. 3 doubles match fell 6-1 in the matchup against Texas State.
Texas State won all six of the singles matches, five of which came in straight sets. Aranguiz forced a third set against Alex Jones in the No. 4 singles match as she responded from a 6-4 loss in the first set with a 7-5 win in the second. With the outcome of the dual already decided, they played a tie-breaker in which Jones won 10-7.
On the men's side Incarnate Word claimed all three doubles matches and then swept the singles events to earn a 7-0 victory over the Panthers.
The Panthers duo of
Taqel Lewis and
Xavier Lawrence fought hard at the No. 2 position falling 6-2 to Francisco Bendana and Joey Vatanadilok.
The Cardinals won three of the six single matches in straight sets, starting at No. 4 as Vantandilok defeated the Panthers Zach Suico, 6-1, 6-2. Gabriel Evans of Incarnate Word defeated
Anirudh Yadav 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 to put the Cardinals up 3-0.
Cesar Rayna forced a third set at the No. 6 as he won the first set 6-4, before falling 6-0 in set two and 10-3 in the deciding set.
The Lady Panthers will return to action when they host Louisiana at Lafayette on Saturday, March 10 for a 3 p.m. match up at the PVAMU Tennis Courts. The men's team will head to Dallas to face Southern Methodist on Monday, March 12 for an 11:30 a.m. first set.
