BOX SCORE HOUSTON – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell to Southern 84-76 Friday in the SWAC Tournament semifinals at Delmar Fieldhouse.
The #4 seeded Lady Panthers battled back from 15-point first-half deficit to take a three-point led during the third quarter but were unable to sustain it against the #1 seed Southern.
Dominique Newman scored a career-high 27 points and added five rebounds, Dominque Newman scored 19 points, and
Jhyrah Cobb posted her third-career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
La'Neique Nealey added seven points, 11 rebounds, and four assists in the Lady Panthers' first SWAC Tournament semifinal appearance since 2015.
Prairie View A&M (15-16) trailed by 15 points twice early in the second quarter before outscoring Southern 20-6 the remainder of the first half. A jumper by Newman started a 10-0 run which ended with eight straight points by Dobbins, including back-to-back three-pointers that cut the deficit to 36-31 with 5:50 to play until halftime.
After the teams traded baskets, the Lady Panthers outscored Southern 8-2 over the final three minutes of the period. Cobb (six points) and Newman (two points) led the run as PVAMU trailed 42-41 at halftime.
Prairie View A&M tied the score twice in the third quarter before taking the lead for the first time. A Dobbins' layup gave the Lady Panthers their first lead of the day, 48-47, with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter. There were two ties and two lead changes over the final stretch of the period, with a three-point play by Tieuel with one second remaining gave Prairie View A&M a 58-57 lead.
The PVAMU lead was again as many as three points in the early moments of the fourth quarter, but Southern regained the lead with just over seven minutes to play and did not relinquish it.
