Softball Shuts Out Ark.Pine Bluff to Advance to Semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M University softball team shut out the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 5-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball tournament to face Texas Southern on Saturday, May 12 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
The Lady Panthers struck first in the top half of the second to open the scoring.  Kylar Ward Flowers hit a single down the first base line, before Alexis Freeman singled to right center on one out. Shelby Williams loaded the bases as she reached base on an error by UAPB's first baseman.  Destinee Williams walked to score Ward-Flowers allowing PVAMU a 1-0 lead.

Prairie View broke through again in the top of the third, loading the bases and pushing two runs across the plate with back-to-back singles by Freeman and S. Williams.  Kelsey Coronado opened the frame with a single down the left field line, before Ward-Flowers reached base on a walk.  Amanda Ford belted a single to right field to load the bases for Freeman, who singled to center field to score Coronado.  S. Williams single to left center scoring Ward-Flowers extending the lead to 3-0
 
Prairie View padded its lead with a RBI single by Laurisa Hernandez that scored Gabriella Fonseca in the top of the fourth.  D. Williams singled up the middle to open the scoring for the Lady Panthers.  Fonseca singled to left center advancing to second on the throw.  Hernandez singled through the middle to score Fonseca advancing the lead to 4-0.

Prairie View added another run for insurance in the top of the seventh, cruising to the win.  Ward-Flowers singled to the shortstop reaching base just before the throw.  Ford sac bunted to move Kim Hernandez, who replaced Ward-Flowers to second.  A single by Freeman sent Hernandez home before she was out at second.  

Crystal Castillo dealt a five-hit shutout, striking out seven.  Freeman was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Ward Flowers, Williams and Coronado each collected a pair of hits.
