COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Prairie View A&M softball team dropped a 9-0 matchup to Baylor in the elimination game to end the 2018 season at the NCAA College Station Regional at Davis Diamond Saturday afternoon.
"This really meant a lot for us to be here," said head PVAMU Softball Coach
Vernon Bland. "We have a group of seniors that fought. We went through some adversity the first two years and for them to be able to leave as champions, and that was one of our goals. I'm proud of the whole team. Right now, we established a culture and now we're looking to build on it and to be back here next year."
Down early thru the first innings 4-0, the Lady Panthers couldn't find a way to get on base until the bottom of the third inning, as PVAMU's
Amanda Ford singled and
Day'Zjah Pennywell doubled to right center field threatening to score with runners on the corners. The Lady Panthers weren't able to capitalize as they left both runners stranded going into the fourth.
Baylor pushed five runs across taking a 9-0 lead in the fourth. A final opportunity in the fifth appeared for the Lady Panthers as Pennywell led off with a single up the middle and
Alyssa Garcia followed with a base hit to right field, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Panthers final batter grounded out to end the Lady Panthers historic season.
Looking ahead to the 2019 season the core that led the team to its first Southwestern Athletic Conference softball championship in 20 years will be returning. Notable returnees include
Destinee Williams, SWAC Softball Tournament MVP
Laurisa Hernandez and outfielder
Shelby Williams.
