The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team will host Jackson State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action on Saturday, with a 3 p.m. scheduled contest at the William J. Nicks Building.
Â
It's the Gold game Saturday as fans are asked to wear their favorite PV Gold. If you can't make it out to the game, it can be viewed at pvpanthers.com/women.
Â
"We are definitely looking forward to the game, after not playing our best basketball last Saturday," said PVAMU head women's basketball coach
Sandy Pugh. "I think the kids are eager to redeem themselves and get back on track for our goal for this season. Jackson State has a new coach as well and has a new system in place and basically has a new team."
Â
The Lady Panthers (5-8, 2-1 SWAC) are coming off of a disappointing, 52-44, loss to rival Texas Southern last weekend. Senior
Shala Dobbins led the team with 12 points, and also had five rebounds. So far this conference season, Dobbins is fourth in the conference in scoring (12.7 ppg.), and first in free throw percentage (.831).
Â
Jackson State (6-9, 1-3 SWAC) enters Saturday's game following a convincing 88-66, victory over Alcorn on Saturday, before falling to Southern on Monday 76-74. Marniesha Hamer led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the game against Alcorn, while scoring 15 points and pulling down nine rebounds against Southern. Hamer is second in the conference in scoring averaging 14.8 ppg.
Â
"Jackson State has kids there that they depend on to score," Pugh said. "Hamer is one of their top players, along with Christinia Ellis, so we will have to play our game and stay focused. Hopefully we can have some of our better players up, healthy, and ready to go."
