Women's Basketball Sweeps Weekend Series With Win Over Arkansas Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team sweeps weekend series with 80-41 win over Arkansas - Pine Bluff, Monday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

"I think we did a better job with the press at the beginning of the game," PVAMU assistant coach Sean LeBeauf said. "We made them (UAPB) turn it over and began rushing them a little bit. We did a very good job capitalizing when they made their mistakes."

PVAMU opened the first quarter on a 5-0 run led by a made three-point shot from junior guard Dominique Newman in the first minute of play. Following a made layup from senior center Artavia Ford gave the Lady Panthers the early advantage. After a 12-3 run to end the period, PV went into the second quarter up 27-9.

After ending on a 14-0 run, the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Golden Lions 20-2 in the second quarter.  Prairie View A&M went into halftime with a 47-11 lead. Newman led the team with 11 points.

Ford delivered the team their first points of the third quarter on a made jump shot at the 9:23 mark, pushing the score 49-13. Following, was a made three-point shot from senior guard Jordyn Penniman to extended PVAMU's lead 52-18. The team went into the fourth quarter leading 66-28.

A made jump shot from junior forward Ke'Asia Williams at the 9:43 mark put the team up 68-28 early in the fourth quarter. Two back-to-back three-point shots in the final minutes of the game sealed PVAMU's victory.

"As they say, you have to protect the house," LeBeauf said. "You have to create such a mentality and such a mindset that anybody coming in, should have to fear you. They have to fear you. That's what champions do. We have to get it to the point where people fear us when they see us. We're not quite there yet, but we're working towards it."

There were three Lady Panthers in double digits led by Dobbins with 19 points in just 15 minutes of play.  Newman added 11, while Ford had 10 in the win.

The Lady Panthers will return home to face Alabama A&M University on Saturday, Feb. 2 for a 3 p.m. tip at the Baby Dome.
