Volleyball Wraps Up Home Regular Season With a Sweep Over Southern

PRAIRIE VIEW - The Prairie View A&M volleyball team closed out their regular season home schedule with a 3-0 sweep against Southern on Monday in the Baby Dome.

"We were really focused and determined tonight," Head PVAMU Volleyball coach TaCho Taylor said. "They were determined to take down Southern, and that is what they did. We were locked in on all cylinders and we're excited for the win."

The Lady Panthers took their first lead of the opening set at 3-2 continuing to push their lead to 5-2, before Southern came within reach at 5-4. A 7-3 Prairie View A&M advanced the Lady Panthers to a 12-6 lead. After capitalizing off of errors made by Jaguars, PVAMU led by as many as 12 points in their 25-13 set one win.

In the second set, the Lady Panthers got going quick as they took a 5-2 lead over the Jaguars. The team held a lengthy lead throughout the period, and a 5-0 run had them leading at 19-11, before Southern pushed back to cut the lead to 19-14. Prairie View outscored Southern 6-4 to close out the period, taking the 25-18 set two win and 2-0 lead in the match.

PVAMU took their first lead of the third set at 4-3, before a quick 7-0 run extended their lead to 10-3. Prairie View A&M managed to stay in control throughout the rest of the set, despite a late 5-1 Southern run that brought the score to 22-17. The Lady Panthers won a tight scoring battle to close the set on a 3-2 run, taking the final set 25-19.

Junior middle blocker Victoria Pearson led the team with 15 kills, seven digs and one block. Junior outside hitter Tamaira Armstrong followed with 12 digs and 11 kills, while freshman middle blocker Hannah Estupinan and senior right side hitter CeTara Carter contributed five kills apiece.

As the team begins to close out finish out the 2019 season, Tyler said the team needs to stay locked in.

"We need these next two wins if we want to be regular season champions," she said. "We want to keep our fate in our own hands. If the team keeps showing up offensively and defensively, and we stay locked in right now, we should be good."

Next up, the Lady Panthers will face Texas Southern on Thursday, Nov. 7 with the first serve set for 6:30 p.m. in Houston.
