GRAMBLING, La. -- The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell to Grambling State 73-57 on Monday at the Frederick C. Hobdy Arena.
The teams tied six times throughout the first quarter, the latest coming at 12 points. After trailing by four, a made three pointer from senior guard Chelsea Tieuel cut the team deficit down to 16-15 with ticks yet to come off the clock, before the end of the period. PVAMU went into the second quarter down 19-15 on a last second three pointer from GSU.
Junior guard Sierra Shepard opened the second quarter with a layup to bring the Lady Panthers within arms-reach at 19-17. The team then took their first lead of the second quarter at 20-19 on a made three-pointer by freshman Keaynna Tolbert at the 8:59 mark. A layup by Tieuel put the team up 22-19 with 6:31 left to play in the half.
PVAMU trailed 28-27 before going on a 7-0 run to end the half with a 34-28 lead. They outscored GSU 19-10 in the second quarter. Junior forward Mariah Campbell led the team with 10 points.
Senior center Artavia Ford gave PVAMU their first points of the second half on jumper that pushed the team ahead 36-30. The team trailed by one before two made free throws from senior guard Erin Willis restored their 38-37 lead. After five lead changes in under a minute, PV trailed by five until a jumper from Willis brought the deficit down 47-44 at the 1:50 mark. The team went into the fourth quarter down 50-46.
The Lady Panthers were down by eight with 7:12 left in the period, until a layup by junior forward Ke'Asia Williams brought the team a little closer at 55-49. A personal 5-0 run by senior guard Shala Dobbins then brought GSU's lead down 57-54 with just under five minutes left to play. PVAMU was unable to contain the Lady Tigers, as they went on a 16-3 run and handed PV the 73-57 loss.
Campbell led the team with a season high 11 points, and eight rebounds. Williams followed with 10 points, and eight rebounds.  Dobbins added 10 points.
The Lady Panthers will return home on Saturday, Feb. 23 to face Mississippi Valley State for a 3 p.m. tip at the Baby Dome.
