Lady Panthers Rally Late, But Lose In Seventh Inning For First Conference Loss

HOUSTON  -  The Prairie View A&M softball team dropped the first of their three-game series and took its first conference loss on a two run walk-off home run in the seventh inning falling 9-8 to Texas Southern on Friday.

Both teams went scoreless through the first inning until the Lady Tigers struck first in their half of the second to take a 1-0 lead.  It was not until the third inning when the Lady Panthers showed a little spark.  Junior Gabrielle Fonseca singled to center field to open the frame.  Freshman Diavionne Dewalt reached base on a fielding error advancing Fonseca.

It was senior Destinee Williams that tripled to center field bringing both Fonseca and Dewalt across the plate for a two run RBI.  Williams then closed out the inning with a score after a sacrifice bunt from junior Cameron Lavergne, giving the team a 3-1 lead over TSU.

PVAMU was down 7-3 going into the sixth inning. The Lady Panthers were able to erase a four run deficit to tie the game.  Daneisha Hinton opened with a single to the right side, while frehman Kaila Lee, who was making her first appearance at the plate replacing senior Day'Zjah Pennywell.  Lee singled to left field advancing Jayla Richard, which stepped in to pinch run for Hinton.  With runners on second and third base, a double down the left field line from Fonseca allowed both Lee and Richard's to score and cut the deficit down to 7-5.

Fonseca came home for the third run of the inning off of a single to center field by sophomore Kimberly Hernandez. With the bases loaded, senior Laurisa Hernandez was walked, allowing Dewalt, which reached base on a hit by pitch to touch home plate and tie the game 7-7.

The team's lone run of the seventh inning came after a flyout to left field from Fonseca to bring in sophomore Brianna Grays for an 8-7 lead. PV was unable to hold TSU, as the Tigers posted two runs in the bottom of the seventh taking the 9-8 win.

Fonseca and Hinton connected with three hits apiece. Fonseca also led with three RBI.

The Lady Panthers will continue the series against TSU with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m., on Saturday, March 30.
