PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Junior
Crystal Castillo pitched a complete one-hitter game to lift the Prairie View A&M 2018 SWAC Softball Champs to a 5-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference three game series Friday at the PVAMU Softball Field.
The Lady Panthers scored a run in the opening frame. On a Walk
Cameron Lavergne reached first, advancing to second on a pass ball, and reaching third on a sac-fly by
Destinee Williams.
Laurisa Hernandez looped a single into center field to score Lavergne for the first Lady Panther score and a 1-0 lead.
Through two scoreless innings, in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded, the second run came when
Brelyn Senegal was hit by a pitch, making it 2-0. The bases remained loaded as another score came in with Lavergne also reaching base on a hit by a pitch to score
Jeah Williams extending the lead to 3-0. D. Williams reached base on a fielder's choice sending
Gabrielle Fonseca across home plate for the 4-0 lead.
After two walks to begin the bottom of the fifth inning and a pitching change,
Day'Zjah Pennywell singled to center field, ushering
Serena Antone for the team's fifth and final run of the game.
Pine Bluff was unable to answer with any runs of their own after both teams going scoreless in the last two innings.
Castillo (12-4) worked the complete seven innings, walking one and striking out 11 batters. Fonseca went 2-for-3 at the plate and Hernandez was 2-for-4 and a RBI.
The Lady Panthers will continue the series against UAPB with a doubleheader set for Saturday, April 27. First pitch will be at 12 p.m. at the PVAMU Softball Field for Senior Day.
