ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M volleyball team fell in their final match of the 2019 Maverick Invite against host Texas-Arlington on Saturday afternoon with the final set scores of 25-20, 26-24, 25-20.
Â
In the first set, the teams began trading points back and forth until PVAMU took a 4-2 lead. Soon the Mavericks took a 6-4 lead, which was followed by a 6-6 tie. UTA regained a 9-7 lead, but the Lady Panthers reeled off six unanswered points to build a 13-9 advantage. However, PVAMU ended up on the wrong side of an 11-2 run, a surge that ultimately cost the Lady Panthers an opportunity at sniping set one.
Â
The Lady Panthers led throughout the early goings of the second period, but UT-Arlington tied the set 13-13. The rest of the way saw seven more ties, but a late pair of points allowed the Mavericks to steal the frame.
Â
PVAMU was down 7-1 early in the third set and continued to trail before closing within 10-8. Despite steady play, the early deficit hindered the Lady Panthers' ability to close the gap.
Â
Junior outside hitter
Tamaira Armstrong led the team with 12 kills, five digs and one assist and earned All-Tournament Honors as well. Junior middle blocker
Victoria Pearson followed with 10 kills and one dig. Senior right side hitter
CeTara Carter also contributed with four kills and two digs.
The Lady Panthers will return to their home court on Friday, Sept. 27 as they host the 2019 SWAC Roundup to begin league play. The team will face Mississippi Valley State University at 3 p.m., then Alcorn State University at 7 p.m., both taking place in the Baby Dome.
