Volleyball Returns to Action at Katrinka Crawford Invitational

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers return to the court this weekend as they head to Beaumont, Texas to take part in Lamar University's 2019 Katrinka Crawford Invitational.

Action begins Friday as PVAMU take on host Lamar at noon. From there, Prairie View continues play against Louisiana-Monroe at 4 p.m. The Lady Panthers will wrap up play with a Saturday match versus South Dakota State at 10 a.m.

"I am expecting a 180 degree turnaround after Tuesday's match against Houston Baptist," said head PVAMU volleyball coach TaCho Tyler."  I'm looking for the team to remain focused, discipline and execute the game plan effectively for 25 points each set."

Prairie View A&M (0-4) currently boasts one of the SWAC's leaders in kills as senior CeTara Carter leads the team with 37 kills. Senior Jaylan Thomas has put away 35 kills so far this year, and junior Victoria Pearson is close behind with 32 putdowns and leads the team with a .267 attack percentage. 

Freshman setter Jakarta Hope averages 5.27 assists per set, and senior Erica Jimenez has tallied 44 assists on the season to give PVAMU a solid 1-2 punch at setter. Defensively, freshman libero Skyla Childs has collected a team-best 56 digs, averaging 3.73 per frame. Carter has figured in on a team-leading 12 blocks this year.

Scouting the Competition:
- Lamar (1-2) is led by Abigale Nash, who posted double-digit kill marks in each of the Cardinals' three matches in the Georgia State Invitational. On the season, Nash has accounted for 37 kills and 40 digs. Erin Pequeno has recorded 52 digs through three matches, averaging four digs a set. 

- South Dakota State (1-2) returns to action for the first time since last weekend, where the Jackrabbits participated in the Eastern Illinois Invitational. Makenzie Hennen – also the team leader in digs (43) – and Crystal Burk each have 42 kills so far this year, with both averaging 3.5 kills per frame. Madison Fay orchestrates the offense with 81 assists (6.75 a set) on the season.

- ULM heads into the tournament with a 3-1 record. Mikaela Worley paces the offense with 46 kills this year, and Albany Schaffer and Kate Blasingame each anchor the ULM backline with 32 and 30 digs, respectively. McKinley Thiede (69 assists) and Darby Fisher (42 assists) have been a productive tandem at setter for the Warhawks.
