LAFAYETTE, La. - Prairie View A&M senior
Xavier Lawrence earned a singles win during the Panthers' men's tennis team's doubleheader versus Louisiana Monday at Cajun Courts.
Lawrence's win came in the second match of the day over Louisiana Kacper Dworak. Down one set to nil, Lawrence tied the match with a 6-3 victory in set two and outlasted Dworak 11-9 to take the match between the respective No. 1 singles players.
However, it was the lone bright spot for the Panthers on the day. Prairie View A&M stumbled 7-0 to the Ragin' Cajuns in the first match of the day. Junior
Rodrigo Yoshikata and freshman
Juan Malham Viada pushed their opponents to a 7-5 score but was unable to stave off an eventual doubles point win for Louisiana.
Yoshikata and Lawrence also managed competitive efforts in their first singles matches, but fell 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively. The Panthers' top singles effort in the morning portion of play came compliments of Kevin Ugartche. The junior was in a tightly contested three-set affair, where he took set one 6-4 over Lousiana's Silvio Cocito-Monoc but was unable to carry that momentum forward, faltering 7-3 and 10-12 in the next frames.
In the second half of the twinbill, Yoshikata and Viada again pushed their opposition to the limit in a 7-5 setback. Ugartche nearly pulled off a comeback of his own in another three-setter versus Cocito-Monoc, dropping set one 6-2 but responding with a 7-5 win to tie the match before falling 10-5 in the deciding frame.
Sophomore Jorge Caballero also posted a valiant effort in the second match, though he was unable to come away with the win during play (6-2, 6-4).
