JACKSON, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M women's and men's tennis teams fell to Alabama A&M during the first day of the 2020 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Roundup hosted on the campus of Jackson State University Friday.

The Lady Panthers dropped a narrow 4-3 decision, while PVAMU's men fell 4-2.

The women's team opened with a win in the doubles column to begin SWAC play. The Lady Panthers' No. 1 pairing Victoria Fuenmayor Castillo and Mahogani Green won their match with a 6-2 score.  Jimena Duran-Castellanos and Jessica Lackey posted a win in the No. 2 doubles match by the score of 6-3.

The third doubles match that featured the pairing of Claudia Andrea Islas Medina and Salma Sanchez Villalobos was unfinished at 5-5.

Alabama A&M took four of the singles matches to earn the victory.  Lackey was able to earn a 6-4, 6-4 singles win at the No. 5 spot.  During the No. 6 singles match, Sanchez Villalobos won a three-set match by the scores of 6-0, 3-6, and 6-0.

Duran-Castellanos fell in the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 6-1.  Fuenmayor Castillo dropped a three-set match at the No. 2 slot by scores of 4-6, 7-6 and 5-7, while Green fell in straight sets by the scores of 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot.  In the No. 4 match, Islas Medina lost 7-5, 6-3, allowing the Bulldogs to secure its victory.

On the men's side, PVAMU was unable to build off of Xavier Lawrence and Jorge Juarez Calballero's 5-3 win at the No. 1 doubles slot as Alabama A&M came away with the doubles point, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matches by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

In singles play, three of the six matches stretched into a third set, with Calballero and Kevin Ugarteche capturing wins in their respective tilts.

In the No. 2 singles match, Caballero won in comeback fashion over AAMU's Ruiz Crespo 5-7, 6-1 and 6-1.  Ugarteche had little trouble at the No. 5 spot, winning in straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 6-1.

Although Lawrence (6-4, 5-7, 4-3) forced a third set, it was a little too late before the Bulldogs clinched the match.
