Tennis Dominates Mississippi Valley on Final Day of SWAC Roundup

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M men's and women's tennis teams closed the first Southwestern Athletic Conference roundup on an exceptional note, sweeping through Mississippi Valley State Sunday on the campus of Jackson State.

The Panther men won 7-0, while the Lady Panthers prevailed 5-0.

On the men's side, Xavier Lawrence and Jorge Juarez Caballero set the tone with a 6-0 win in their No. 1 doubles match. No. 2 doubles team Rodrigo Yoshikata and Juan Malham Viada and No. 3 doubles tandem Kevin Ugarteche and Tyrese Washington won their respective matchups by scores of 6-0, giving Prairie View A&M the doubles point.

The Panthers' dominance continued in singles play as Lawrence, Caballero, Yoshikata, Viada, Ugarteche and Washington all won their matches in straight sets by scores of 6-0, 6-0. With the effort, PVAMU picked up its first win of the season.

The Lady Panthers picked up right where the men left off, starting with a 6-0 win by No. 1 doubles team Victoria Fuenmayor Castillo and Mahogani Green. No. 2 doubles duo Jessica Lackey and Jimena Duran-Castellanos and No. 3 doubles team Claudia Andrea Islas Medina and Salma Sanchez Villalobos followed suit with 6-0 victories in their matches.

In singles action Castillo, Medina, Lackey and Villalobos continued the spotless day of play for the PVAMU tennis programs. The quartet went on to win their matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Next Up:
The teams will have a week off from competition before returning to the courts on March 1, when the men face off with Rice, while the women take on Texas A&M.
