ITTA BENA, Miss. – A career night by senior Dominique Newman propelled Prairie View A&M women's basketball to its best offensive effort of the season, as the Panthers dismantled Mississippi Valley State 89-72 Monday evening during Southwestern Athletic Conference action at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
Newman scored a career-high 29 points, shooting 7-of-12 from beyond the arc for the Panthers (11-15, 8-6 SWAC). Freshman Diana Rosenthal scored 11 points, while seniors Ke'Asia Williams and Mariah Campbell scored 10 points each.
Freshman Kennedy Paul knocked down a three as the first quarter buzzer sounded to give the Panthers a 21-17 lead going into the second period from which they never looked back, despite the Devilettes' best efforts. After MVSU closed the gap to one with 5:43 left in the half, Newman caught fire, knocking down four of the Panthers' five three-pointers in the quarter to power a 19-7 PVAMU surge that resulted in a 43-30 halftime lead.
From there, it was all Panthers. Prairie View A&M led by double-digits virtually the rest of the way, pushing its lead to as many as 20 at one point.
Of Prairie View A&M's 27 made shots, 15 of them came from three-point land as the Panthers connected on 53.6 percent of its tries from downtown. The Panthers had an assist on 25 of their 27 field goals in the win.
Prairie View A&M committed just eight turnovers in the game.
Ayonna Cotton scored 19 points to lead the Devilettes.
