PRAIRIE VIEW – Despite a doubles win from
Mahogani Green and
Victoria Fuenmayor Castillo, Prairie View A&M women's tennis fell 7-0 to Lamar during a rain-shortened day Saturday evening at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The sides were initially scheduled for a double-header but the second match was cancelled due to weather.
How it Happened:
After a loss in the No. 2 doubles match, Prairie View A&M got on the board as Green and Castillo took down their adversaries in the No. 1 doubles match to force a decisive third tandem contest. Though it was a back-and-forth battle with Jimena Duran Castellanos and
Salma Sanchez Villalobos and Lamar's No. 3 pairing, the Cardinals took the doubles point after the Panthers' duo fell 7-6 (7-5).
In singles action, Green, Castillo and
Ruju Chauhan put up the strongest efforts for the Panthers. Green managed a set win in the No. 3 singles bout but ultimately faltered in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-3). Chauhan had similar efforts in the No. 4 match but was unable to overcome her opponent during a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 decision.
In the battle of the No. 1 singles players, Castillo jumped ahead with a 6-4 win in set one, but was unable to hold her early advantage, dropping the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
Castellanos (6-0, 6-3),
Jessica Lackey (6-1, 7-6) and Villalobos (6-4, 6-2) fell in straight sets during their respective singles matches, giving the win to Lamar.
