PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M volleyball team (3-0, 2-0) looks to keep rolling tomorrow afternoon as it takes on Alcorn State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at 2 p.m. in the Davey L. Whitney Complex
Panther News and Notes:
- PVAMU looks to start 3-0 in conference play for the second-straight season. The Lady Panthers opened the 2019 campaign with a 4-0 start versus SWAC opponents.
- Sophomores Jakarta Hope and Kimiria Coffee are coming off standout weeks where both were honored by the SWAC as Setter of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively. Hope tallied 49 assists over three matches, flashing as an effective two-way player with 32 digs as well and a pair of double-doubles. Coffee posted 22 kills, eight digs, and eight blocks (1 solo) in three matches this past week.
- Freshman Malia Viernes leads the Panthers with 28 kills on the season, and Victoria Pearson (26) and Tamaira Armstrong (23) are close behind.
- The Lady Panthers have won 16 straight matches versus Alcorn State.
Scouting the Lady Braves:
- This will be the season opener for the Lady Braves, who finished 7-23 (3-15 SWAC) in 2019.
- Alcorn State returns a pair of selections to the Preseason All-SWAC team in Jasmine Chambers (543 assists, 179 digs in 2019) and Jeda Curry (155 kills, 108 digs in 2019) as well as multi-faceted libero Fiapaipai Iosia (291 digs, 40 assists and 12 kills in 2019). Simone Barren led the team in blocks with 64 and returns this season.
