PRAIRIE VIEW -   Head women's basketball coach Sandy Pugh announced the hiring of her new Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Britney Washington.

Coach Washington brings knowledge and passion to the position.  Most recently Coach Washington served as an assistant coach at Mississippi Valley State.  Prior to MVSU, Washington spent three years as an assistant basketball, volleyball, and track and field coach at her alma mater, West Feliciana High School in St. Francisville, La.

Washington attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and played on the women's basketball team on an athletic scholarship (2012-2016), under coach Pugh's direction. During her stint at Southern, Washington won two regular season Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, scored over 1000 points, and earned All-SWAC honors her junior and senior years.

Prior to attending Southern University, Washington was recognized as the Advocate's High School Star of Stars in the Baton Rouge metro area after excelling in basketball, as well as, volleyball and track and field. While averaging 30.2 ppg, Washington led her high school basketball team in scoring, rebounds, steals, and assists and was the highest scoring female basketball player in the area since WNBA star Seimone Augustus. She was also a javelin thrower and pole vaulter for the WFHS 2011 State Championship track and field team.

Washington is a native of St. Francisville, Louisiana and the daughter of Patrick, Vernice, and Nyesha Washington.

"One of the SWAC's most prolific shooters," said Pugh.  This is an awesome opportunity to work with one of my former players.  Britney can still shoot it and our kids found that our really quick, as she is a well-liked coach amongst her pears.  Her duties will consist of coaching the guards on the team.  She will be a great coach here at PVAMU.  After losing veteran assistants coaches Courtney Pruitt and David Frank created some big shoes to fill for us.  I think Britney will help fill a portion of that void.  She is young, hungry, and has a mind for basketball.  She knows and loves the conference.  She is a hard worker and Britney will actively recruit top tier student-athletes for PVAMU.  Britney has a big future ahead of her and we are thrilled to have her on board."
