PRAIRIE VIEW - In what is likely a preview for the SWAC tournament, the Lady Panthers went 1-2 in the two day SWAC cluster falling to Jackson State (0-3) and bouncing back against Mississippi Valley (3-0) on Sunday, prior to concluding the event with a 3-1 loss to Alabama A&M on Monday in Baton Rouge, La.
Game 1 (vs. Jackson State)
In their first matchup of the cluster, the Lady Panthers fell to conference-leader Jackson State in three straight sets by the scores of 14-25, 16-25, and 12-25.
One of the bright spots for the team, freshman
Kiersten Atkinson, who led the way for the Lady Panthers with seven kills on 13 swings, was good enough for a hitting percentage of .538.
Libero
Skyla Childs paced the team in digs (11), while
Jakarta Hope dished out 16 of the Lady Panther's 20 assists.
Game 2 (vs. Mississippi Valley)
In what would be a bounce-back game, Prairie View A&M steamrolled the Delta Devils to conclude the opening day (25-17, 25-12, 25-15).
This time around, it was middle blocker
Sanai Fitchett leading the charge with eight kills on a .571 clip. The sophomore from Powder Springs, Texas also posted three digs and two blocks.
Outside Hitter
Caiya Artis was everywhere for the Lady Panthers recording stats in every major statistical category with six kills, three aces, one block, three assists, and eight digs. Childs contributed 15 digs, while
Jakarta Hope dished out 20 assists.
Game 3 (vs. Alabama A&M)
This was not typical dog and cat fight as the Lady Panthers fell to the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M 3-1. PVAMU opened the match winning the first set going tit-for-tat with AAMU. Childs scored four consecutive points on aces to take an 11-8 lead. PV continued their momentum ending the set 25-20.Â
Set two was slightly different as this time the Bulldogs took the lead, but the pesky Lady Panthers wouldn't lay down easy as they rallied back but it wasn't enough as Alabama A&M took set two with a 26-24 victory.
Again the Lady Panthers started the rally taking a quick lead until some costly mistakes took them out of the set. Another tit-for-tat ending extended the frame to a 30-28 final and the Bulldogs taking set three.
Forcing a fourth set the Bulldogs opened with a 9-4 lead before some the Lady Panthers rallied back to tie the game five times prior to AAMU taking set three with a 25-18 win to end the match.
Three Lady Panthers posted double digit kills; Fitchett led all players with 13, while Atkinson had 11 and
Kimira Coffee knocked down 10. Hope dished out a season high of 39 assists. Hope also added four service aces and 11 digs. Coffee posted her first double-double adding 17 digs.Â
Caiya Artis also paced the Lady Panthers with 17 digs, along with Childs, who also had four service aces to add to her numbers.
