Miscues prove costly for Panthers versus Texans

2/24/2021 7:25:00 PM

BOX SCORE PRAIRIE VIEW – Early miscues resulted in an uneven outing for the Prairie View A&M volleyball team (5-2), who dropped a Wednesday afternoon match to Tarleton State (6-7) at the Baby Dome. Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.

How it Happened:
After a quick start, Prairie View A&M fell behind as Tarleton State put together an 8-0 run to take control. The Panthers were unable to make up ground for much of the first set thanks to self-inflicted errors until putting together a flourish once Tarleton State earned a chance at set point. The Panthers got within six before Tarleton State snuck a quick attack past the defense to claim the set.

Neither side could gain much distance from the other in a tightly-contested second set. After a service ace from Skyla Childs tied the game at 15, the Texans managed a 5-2 spurt to pull ahead. Kills from Tamaira Armstrong and Thaynara Godoi pulled the Panthers closer, but a late service error derailed the Panthers' momentum, allowing Tarleton State to claim a 2-0 lead.

From there, the Panthers were slow to get going in the final set and despite a brief rally midway through, the Texans' early lead was too much to overcome.

Key Stats:
Victoria Pearson led the Panthers with eight kills. Miriam Cardoner posted 16 assists with nine digs and a pair of service aces. Childs put up 15 digs and three service aces.

Lauren Kersey and Hali'a Hogan led Tarleton State with 12 kills. Kayla Brannon added 32 assists and 10 digs.

Up Next:
Prairie View A&M returns to action tomorrow afternoon versus Southern in its Dig Pink Game. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from the Baby Dome.
