BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A dominant effort from Tamaira Armstrong was enough to power Prairie View A&M volleyball to a straight-set romp over arch-rival Texas Southern in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament. Set scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-13.
How it Happened:
Down 5-4 early, the Panthers took control thanks to a 4-0 run powered by a pair of kills from Kimira Coffee. Though Texas Southern closed within two, a 6-1 Lady Panther run ensured that Prairie View A&M would stay in the driver's seat. From there, Autumn Dowell and Coffee punctuated matters with a kill each and a tandem block to help seal set one.
After overcoming a 16-15 deficit in set two with a 10-4 run to take a 2-0 lead, Armstrong took over. The senior overwhelmed Texas Southern with seven kills in the deciding frame as Prairie View A&M coasted to the semifinal round.
Key Stats:
Armstrong led with 13 kills and 11 digs. Victoria Pearson added eight kills and two total blocks, and Coffee chipped in six kills. Jakarta Hope put up 20 assists, and Miriam Cardoner added 17 assists. Skyla Childs led the defensive effort with 17 digs.
