BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M volleyball team saw its season come to a heart-breaking close, as the Lady Panthers fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a five-set marathon during the semifinal round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament. Set scores were 26-24, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 10-15.
How it Happened:
Down 5-1 to begin, PVAMU was put on the defensive early. The Lady Panthers clawed back into the game behind the play of Tamaira Armstrong as well as miscues from UAPB's offense. However, Prairie View A&M wasn't able to fully overtake the Lady Lions until Armstrong and Thaynara Godoi turned away a Zyonn Smith attack to make it 23-22 Lady Panthers. From there, Armstrong and Godoi each had a late kill to wrap up set one.
After nearly overcoming an 18-11 deficit in set two only to fall just short, the Lady Panthers appeared poised to take set three after building a 14-10 lead. The advantage wouldn't hold, as untimely misfires from Prairie View A&M allowed UAPB to steal a 2-1 advantage.
The Lady Panthers refused to go quietly, jumping ahead in set four thanks to strong play from Armstrong. The Lady Lions made it interesting late, but service gaffes ensured a fifth and decisive set. Unfortunately, the Lady Panthers ran out of gas in the final frame, as UAPB jumped to a 9-4 lead. Despite a late charge, the early deficit was too much to overcome for the Lady Panthers.
Key Stats:
Armstrong accounted for 13 kills and 23 digs. Victoria Pearson and Lauren Allen put down 11 kills each, and Godoi put away 10 kills and 11 digs. Jakarta Hope put up 28 assists along with 12 digs, and Miriam Cardoner added 17 assists. Skyla Childs led with 24 digs.
