Football stumbles at UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – A turnover-plagued second half proved costly for the Prairie View A&M football team (2-1, 2-1 SWAC) during a 36-31 setback at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-0, 4-0 SWAC) during Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Simmons Bank Field.

How it Happened:
Trazon Connley got the Panthers on the board early in the game, capping a five-play, 73-yard drive with a 28-yard scoring strike to Khris Simmons. The Golden Lions responded on their next drive with a touchdown, but Prairie View A&M would carry a 14-7 lead into the second quarter, taking advantage of a UAPB fumble and cashing in with a 2-yard touchdown run by Tony Mullins.

After UAPB quarterback Skyler Perry scored from a yard out, the point after made it 14-14. The Golden Lions took the lead as Perry found Josh Wilkes for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Undeterred, Prairie View A&M fired back as Connley hit Travis O'Conner for an 18-yard scoring hookup to cap a seven-play, 75-yard drive. UAPB scored 10 unanswered over the second and third quarters, but PVAMU cut into the lead thanks to a 25-yard field goal from Carlos Villagomez with 7:02 left.

The Panthers found themselves down 36-24 with 12:14 left after Perry and Wilkes connected for a 3-yard touchdown, but Connley again brought the Panthers within one possession when he hit Kalen Riles with a touchdown toss from seven yards out. The Golden Lions looked poised to run out the clock, but Storey Jackson forced and recovered an Omar Allen fumble to give the Panthers another crack at it. Unfortunately, the Panthers turned it over on downs and despite a final chance was unable to overcome the Golden Lions late.

Key Stats:
Connley threw for a career-high 341 yards and three scores but was picked off three times in the second half. He also rushed for a team-best 67 yards. Mullins hauled in 10 passes for 114 yards, and Simmons had 102 yards receiving on three grabs. Jackson led the defense with 13 total stops and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Darius Campbell had three tackles and a pair of pass breakups.

Perry accounted for 246 total yards (201 passing) and five total touchdowns (four passing).
