PRAIRIE VIEW – Though the final game of the 2021 regular season did not end as hoped for the Prairie View A&M softball team, the Lady Panthers' senior class filled the stat sheet one last time at PVAMU Softball Field versus Grambling State.
How It Happened:
The seniors accounted for every run batted in during the Lady Panthers' 9-6 setback versus the Lady Tigers.
Alyssa Garcia led the charge early with a RBI single to score
Ryleigh Love and give Prairie View A&M a 1-0 lead.
Down 4-1 in in the fourth, the core of the Lady Panthers made its presence known once again in the fourth inning, as a RBI double from senior
Alexandria Lewis brought home fellow senior
Serena Antone to cut into Grambling State's lead. Not long after, senior
Gabrielle Fonseca slapped a RBI single to left to make it 4-3.
Though the contest turned away from Prairie View A&M's favor in the sixth thanks to untimely miscues that gifted the Lady Tigers four of its five runs, the scrappiness that had come to define the Lady Panthers' soon-to-be graduates never faded. Lewis delivered a two-run single to score Antone and senior
Brianna Grays, and senior Natalie McLennan singled home senior
Cameron Lavergne before the late rally fell short.
In all, Prairie View A&M's seniors accounted for 12 of the team's 14 hits on the day, with McLennan, Fonseca, Lewis and Grays posting two hits each.
In her final home start,
Kara Fucci threw 5.1 innings, striking out three.
Now the Lady Panthers turn their attention to the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament in Gulfport, Miss. beginning May 11. There, the Lady Panthers look to send their seniors off with another tournament crown to add to the trophy case.
