LORMAN, Miss. – Sophomore
Brittany Garner keyed a strong performance that carried the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team to a 63-55 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over the Alcorn State Lady Braves Monday at the Davey Whitney Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A back-and-forth scoring frenzy started within the first four minutes of the game. The Lady Braves were able to break loose as they went on a 9-0 run with just under a minute left in the first frame. A three point shot by
Diana Rosenthal in the closing seconds put the Panthers within three (17-14) to close out the first quarter.
Again the Braves went up by as many as 10, but the pesky Panthers chipped away at the deficit to make it a one point lead for the Lady Braves with 5:48 left in the second quarter. It was Garner who laid a nice swift layup to make it a 25-24 score in favor of PVAMU. From their Prairie View A&M used critical possessions to take a 36-27 lead going into the break.
PVAMU continued to push their lead by as many as 15 to start the beginning of the third quarter. The Panthers continued their lead as they closed out the third quarter with a Garner layup to take a 54-43 lead.
Not much had changed in the remaining minutes of play as the Panthers continued their lead to close out with the win.
Garner led the Panthers with a career high of 21 points. She also had 12rebounds grabbing her first double-double of the season.
Kirdis Clark added 13 points, two rebounds, a season high six assists and one block to the win, while Rosenthal had 12 points, four rebounds, two assist, and four steals.
Janae Charles scored a season high of nine points and grabbed a season high 12 rebounds.
The next action for the Panthers will host the Alabama State Lady Hornets, Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 22. Saturday is slated for Alumni Appreciation Night for all former basketball players.
