PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell short in the final quarter dropping a 91-77 decision against the Texas Southern Tigers Saturday afternoon in the William J. Nicks Building.
Both juniors
Diana Rosenthal and
Kennedy Paul paced the Panthers with a team-high of 18 points apiece. Fellow teammates
Brittany Garner and
Kennedi Heard had solid performances, netting 12 and 10 points each, respectively. Garner and
Jessica Soders tallied a team-high of nine rebounds, Garner also added one assist, and two blocks. Soders scored seven points prior to her fouling out, she also had four assist, one block and one steal.
Texas Southern fell behind in the first couple of minutes as the Panthers scored back-to-back buckets to take a 7-2 lead. PVAMU advanced their lead to seven (16-9) with under three minutes left in the quarter. The score was knotted at 18-18 with a minute left on the clock as the Lady Tigers took a 21-18 lead, after the opening period.
TSU maintained their lead until a 27-27 tie through the 3:23-minute mark of the second quarter. The Panthers scored five unanswered points through the 2:44 mark to take the lead. The teams traded buckets over the last two minutes of play to eventually close the half and head into the locker room leading by four, 39-35.
The game was tied three more times as the Panthers went cold allowing TSU to advance their lead to a many as 16 with under a minute left in the quarter 65-49.
A couple of free throws and a huge 3-point shot by Paul get the Panthers right back into the contest 68-65. Texas Southern, however took control in the final minute to producing 10 consecutive free throws to take the victory 91-77.
Both teams shot 80 percent from the free throw line as Texas Southern went 33-41 from the free stripe and the Panthers went 20-25.
