HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M University volleyball team split the day Sunday, falling to host team Alabama A&M 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 27-25), but took down Mississippi Valley State in the afternoon match 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16).
How it Happened:
Game One
PVAMU 0, AAMU 3
The Lady Panthers opened up set one strong, scoring eight of the first 11 points, prior to the Bulldogs using a 12-6 run. Back-to-back kills by
Kiersten Atkinson and
Leila Smalls put PVAMU back up by one (16-15). The two teams were knotted at 16 for a final tie, before the Lady Bulldogs went on a final run pulling away from the Lady Panthers to take the first set 25-20.
Set two started in favor of the Lady Bulldogs, who jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. Alabama A&M continued their scoring tandem never looking back building their lead with a 10-6 run closing set two out 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead over PVAMU.
Out of the break the set was a more contested affair as the Lady Panthers took an early 7-3 lead. The Lady Bulldogs rallied back with four unanswered points. Then it began as the set was knotted at 16-16. The scores would tie four last times (17-17, 20-20, 24-24, 25-25), as the Lady Panthers fight to the end, was not enough with miscues by PVAMU led to the Lady Bulldogs 27-25 victory owning set three and the match 3-0.
Smalls led the Lady Panthers offense with nine kills. Makinzie Taplin dished out a season high of 24 assists, while
Skyla Childs controlled the back row with 14 digs. Childs and Taplin had two aces apiece in the match. Although
Kiersten Atkinson had six kills, she was also big on the front line with three blocks.
Game Two
PVAMU 3, Miss. Valley State 0
In the afternoon affair the Lady Panthers opened up with authoritative fashion in their second match of the SWAC roundup versus Miss. Valley State.
PVAMU had complete control from the beginning to the end of set one jumping out to a 14-2 lead and never looking back winning the opening set 25-16.
Set two saw three ties with the final tie coming at 13-13. The teams battled from there going back-and-forth to the end. The Lady Panthers took advantage of a service ace by Childs followed by a big kill from
Skylynn Wynn edging over the Devilettes by the score of 25-23.
Set three was another dog fight for the Lady Panthers. Valley opened the set taking an early lead, but their lead dwindled after a 9-9 tie. PVAMU went on a 6-0 run (22-12) closing out the set with a 25-16 win and the 3-0 match.
Taylor Roberts led the Lady Panthers with 13 kills. Atkinson added eight kills, and
Ruby Osawey added five more while hitting a .455 clip. Taplin dished out 14 assists and added seven digs. Freshman
Trinity Williams had a career high of 13 assists also. Wynn led the defense with three blocks, followed by Atkinson and
Delaney Esterling, added two apiece as well.
The Lady Panthers will continue play in Huntsville with a final match against Florida A&M at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 10.
