PRAIRIE VIEW- Prairie View A&M softball team used a six-run second inning propelling them past Grambling State, 9-0 on Friday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lady Panthers got off to a quick start offensively as they placed one run on the board in the bottom of the first, when Biviana Figueroa crossed the plate on a Maddison Parker RBI single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.
- PVAMU batted around forcing a pitching change in the middle of the bottom second inning, after the Lady Panthers had already added three runs to take a 4-0 lead. This did not stop Prairie View as they added a total of six runs to their score.
- Brelyn Senegal opened the inning with a single to left field. With one out Maya Barnes singled down right field line scoring Senegal. A 2 RBI home run by Aniya Spangler gave the Lady Panthers a 4-0 lead, before Figueroa singled up the middle stopping at first. With two outs Grambling was forced to make a pitching change, but Jaylyn Davis was able to single to left field moving Figueroa to her next base. A 2 RBI double to right field by Parker advanced the Lady Panthers lead to 6-0. A final score by Taliya Talley, who doubled for an RBI to left field gave PVAMU the 7-0 second inning lead.
- A hit by the Tigers in the top of the third inning with an infield single placed a runner on base. A walk advanced the GSU runner, but the Lady Tigers were unable to advance any further as the Lady Panthers escaped the frame unscathed.
- Prairie View A&M would not turn away so easily as they scored two more runs in the bottom of the third for a 9-0 score. Destinee Smith opened the third with a single bunt beating the throw, before Audrey Garcia doubled to right field for an RBI single for an 8-0 lead. With two outs Figueroa hit an RBI double to right field for the 9-0 score.
- A pitching change in the top of the fourth for the Lady Panthers kept the Lady Tigers bats quiet as defense did their job with three up and three down. With a scoreless bottom of the fourth for the Lady Panthers, GSU had one more opportunity, but PVAMU came out on top, which proved to be the final margin.
- Cailin Massey picked up the win for Prairie View as she improved to 7-11 this season, and GSU's Payton Shells (3-1) was charged with the loss.
- All of Prairie View A&M's players walked away with a hit, while Parker led the offense finishing 2-for-2 at the plate and 3 RBI's.
The Lady Panthers will play a doubleheader on Saturday to complete the three game series versus Grambling State. The first pitch is set for noon at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
