Defensive effort leads Women's Basketball past Jarvis Christian 105-62

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --  On Wednesday night, the women's basketball team delivered a commanding performance against the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs at the William Nicks Building in Prairie View, TX. The Panthers secured a resounding 105-62 victory, enhancing their season record to 2-0.

From the outset, the Panthers established a robust lead, concluding the first half with a 30-point advantage at 55-25. This momentum continued into the second half, culminating in their emphatic win. Key contributions came from CJ Wilson, who not only topped the score charts with 25 points but also emphasized the importance of defense in her game strategy.

"Having a standard for myself has been the key to success," Wilson stated. "The number one thing I tell myself is play defense."

Other notable performances included Jelissa Reese and Nia Jordan, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively. The defensive effort was highlighted by key plays from Amauri Williams and a strong team effort in rebounding, which were pivotal in maintaining their lead.

The Panthers held Jarvis Christian to just 9.5 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-21 shooting performance.

Prairie View A&M grabbed 60 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Jarvis Christian's 33, led by Laila Robinson's 13 boards. The Panthers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 20 rebounds into 20 second chance points.

Prairie View A&M did a great job disrupting Jarvis Christian shots in the contest, coming away with eight blocks. Amauri Williams led the way individually for the Panthers with two rejections.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 4-3 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 13-0 run with 8:11 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 17-3. The Panthers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 31-16 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 31 points close to the basket.

Prairie View A&M kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 13-0 run starting at the 9:00 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Wilson, to increase its lead to 44-18. The Panthers proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 55-25 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 18 of its 24 points close to the basket.

Prairie View A&M wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Reese, to expand its lead further to 63-25 with 7:18 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Panthers added nine points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 86-39 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 31 points in the paint.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 19 points in the paint.
