Prairie View A&M falls 71-63 to Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 25-point performance from the bench, but fell 71-63 to the Florida A&M Rattlers on the road Monday.

The Panthers (9-12, 5-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 17 points, five assists and three steals. Amauri Williams added 12 points and two blocks off the bench and Jada Roberson added nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Prairie View A&M pulled down 48 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Florida A&M's 38, led by eight boards from Gerlyn Smith. The Panthers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 21 rebounds into 18 second chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 21 Florida A&M turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Jessica Soders led the way individually for the Panthers with three steals.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Adreanna Waddle, to take an early lead with 8:20 left in the first quarter. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-13.

Florida A&M kept adding to that lead, building a 37-29 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Waddle, to narrow its deficit to 37-35. Florida A&M responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Panthers trailing 39-35 heading into halftime.

Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 54-41 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of four Florida A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.

Florida A&M kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-45 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Payne's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 61-55 with 4:18 to go in the contest. Florida A&M responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-63. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
