Defensive effort not enough as Prairie View A&M closes out their 2024 campaign to Jackson State 67-58

BIRMINGHAM, AL --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept Jackson State to just 20 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-10 shooting performance but fell 67-58 to the Tigers at Bartow Arena Wednesday to close out the 2024 season.

The Panthers (11-17) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 19 points and two steals. Mikayla Hutchinson added 12 points and Amauri Williams helped out with 10 points.

Led by Gerlyn Smith's three offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 18 second-chance points.

Prairie View A&M's defense held Jackson State to only 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After playing to a 4-4 tie early in the game, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 8:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Hutchinson, to take a 10-4 lead. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-12 advantage. Prairie View A&M got out and ran in the period, scoring four points on the break.

The Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 37-28.

Jackson State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-34 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jada Roberson, to trim its deficit to 47-42 with 2:08 to go in the third. The Panthers were unable to cut further into the deficit but did not cede ground to Jackson State either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 49-44. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 67-58. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 14 total points.
