PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team held Texas College to just 20 percent from 3-point range in a 3-for-15 shooting performance on the way to a 74-63 win over the Steers at home Friday.
The Lady Panthers (1-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Crystal Schultz, who had 24 points. Cj Wilson tacked on a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds and Alana Shields added eight points, four assists and two steals.
Prairie View A&M out-rebounded Texas College 46-23 in Friday's game, led by Wilson's 15 boards. The Lady Panthers also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Texas College to only 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Steers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed one second chance points while Prairie View A&M cleared 32 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-4, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 5:12 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mercy Wamet, to take a 10-6 lead. The Lady Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-14 advantage. Prairie View A&M took advantage of five offensive rebounds to score five second chance points out of 16 total in the period
Prairie View A&M kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:01 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Jacque Giron, to increase its lead to 23-16. The Steers then came roaring back to take a 35-34 lead heading into halftime.
Prairie View A&M came out of haltime rallying and had constructed a 40-38 lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Wilson, to expand its lead further to 46-38 with 5:10 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Steers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-53 edge.
Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 58-55 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Wilson's layup, to grow the lead to 66-55 with 7:34 to go in the contest. The Lady Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 74-63 win. Prairie View A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring nine fast break points.
