TULSA, OK --Cj Wilson, Crystal Schultz and Jacque Giron combined to score 45 of Prairie View A&M's 59 total points, but the Lady Panthers fell to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 79-59 on the road Sunday.
Wilson led the Lady Panthers (0-2) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Schultz tacked on 17 points and Giron helped out with 11 points.
The Prairie View A&M offense was very productive from downtown, making eight threes on 22 attempts. Schultz was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Panthers, draining three treys in the contest.
Prairie View A&M forced 17 Tulsa turnovers. The Lady Panthers turned those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Alana Shields led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-7, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 4:41 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 13-12. Tulsa answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Lady Panthers down 18-16 entering the second quarter.
The Lady Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 37-31 halftime deficit.
Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Panthers faced a 56-42 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's 11 third-quarter points.
Tulsa kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 68-47 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Giron's three, to shrink the deficit to 68-52 with 5:03 to go in the contest. Tulsa responded and outscored the Lady Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-59. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
