Defensive effort not enough as Prairie View A&M falls to Alabama A&M 68-41

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team held Alabama A&M to just 36.1 percent shooting from the field, but fell 68-41 to the Bulldogs at home Thursday.

Ja'nya Polk led the Lady Panthers (2-16, 0-7) with five points, two steals and six blocks. Alana Shields also tacked on 11 points and five steals and Mercy Wamet helped out with two points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 21 Alabama A&M turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shields' five steals led the way individually for the Lady Panthers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-0, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 6:15 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Cj Wilson, to narrow its deficit to 9-7. Alabama A&M answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Lady Panthers down 15-11 entering the second quarter.

The Lady Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 34-17 halftime deficit.

Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Panthers faced a 56-28 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled three of the team's 11 third-quarter points.

Alabama A&M kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 64-31 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 64-36 with 1:20 to go in the contest. The Lady Panthers kept their comeback going, but Alabama A&M managed to hold on for the 68-41 win. Prairie View A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring five fast break points.
