PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Alana Shields and Margan Allen combined to score 32 total points - 65.3 percent of Prairie View A&M's points - but the Lady Panthers fell to the UAPB Golden Lions 53-49 at home Thursday.
The Lady Panthers (2-12, 0-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Shields, who had 18 points and three steals. Allen tacked on 14 points and two steals and Ja'nya Polk added six points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
The Prairie View A&M defense held UAPB shooters to just 29.9 percent from the field, including 15.4 percent from three-point range. The Lady Panthers also kept Indiya Bowen to 4-of-22 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 15-14.
The Lady Panthers and Golden Lions then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 29-28 in favor of UAPB.
Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Panthers faced a 45-39 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points.
UAPB kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-44 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 51-49 with 44 seconds to go in the contest. UAPB responded and outscored the Lady Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 53-49. Prairie View A&M took advantage of two UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways.
