Panthers Rally Past Grambling, 21-14, at State Fair Classic

DALLAS, Texas — Prairie View A&M turned in a strong defensive performance and scored 14 unanswered points after halftime to defeat Grambling State, 21-14, Saturday night at the Cotton Bowl in the State Fair Classic.

The Panthers improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Grambling State fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in SWAC action.

Prairie View A&M's defense limited the Tigers to just 72 rushing yards and 265 total yards on the night. The Panthers also held Grambling scoreless for more than three quarters before the Tigers added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Tevin Carter directed the Panthers' offensive attack, completing 18-of-22 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Carter completed 81.8 percent of his passes and averaged 7.3 yards per attempt.

Rodny Ojo was Carter's top target, hauling in five receptions for 64 yards.

On the ground, Chase Bingmon led the Panthers with 42 rushing yards, while Jahbari Kuykendall added 41 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Prairie View A&M held Grambling to 265 total yards, including just 72 yards rushing. Kamrin Canterbury recorded six tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss, while Jace Ward also contributed defensively in the victory.

The Panthers controlled the football for 31:40 and consistently extended drives, converting 5-of-12 third-down attempts and 2-of-3 fourth-down opportunities.

How It Happened

Grambling State struck first, taking a 7-0 lead before Prairie View A&M answered with a touchdown to even the score at 7-7 with 3:39 remaining in the second quarter.

The Panthers carried that momentum into the second half.

Prairie View A&M took its first lead of the night when Jahbari Kuykendall broke loose for a 17-yard rushing touchdown, putting the Panthers ahead 14-7.

The Panthers' defense continued to keep Grambling off the scoreboard while the offense added another touchdown with 9:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 21-7.

Grambling added a late touchdown to cut the deficit to seven, but Prairie View A&M's defense held firm down the stretch to secure the 21-14 victory.

The win marked another strong conference performance for the Panthers, who remain undefeated in SWAC play through two league contests.
