James L. Cowan, IV is entering his second season as the Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis coach at Prairie View A&M University.
Before joining the PVAMU coaching staff, Cowan was the Head Men's and Women's Tennis coach at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. While at UAPB, Cowan was named Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach at UAPB in 2013. In that same season, his women’s team attained the highest GPA in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in 2013 with a 3.7 cumulative grade point average. In the 2014 season, his women's team made a SWAC Tournament appearance, and he had six players earn All-Conference honors between the men's and women's tennis team. Both of his teams have won the NCAA Public Recognition Award, with the women’s team winning the award four years straight (2013-2016) and the men winning the award in 2014.
Outside of coaching at UAPB, Cowan served many roles within the tennis community for more than ten years. Academy Coach at Lost Forrest Tennis Club (Houston, TX), Academy Coach at King Daddy Tennis Club (Houston, TX), Head Men's and women's Tennis coach at St. Pius X High School (Houston, TX), Director of Tennis at the Boys and Girls Club, Director & Head Tennis Pro at Pine Bluff Country Club, and Assistant Tennis Coach at Epiphany Court (Memphis, TN).
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Cowan earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Adminstration with a Concentration in Marketing from UAPB, where he graduated in 2010 with a 3.8 cumulative GPA, and a Masters in Sports Administration from Arkansas State University. Cowan was a four-year letter winner in tennis at UAPB from 2005-09 and was later named Assistant Tennis coach at UAPB in 2010. Cowan is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
