Vernon Bland enters his 15th season overall with the Lady Panthers as the all-time winningest head softball coach in program history at Prairie View A&M University, totaling 278 career victories. A proud Prairie View A&M alumnus and PVAMU Baseball Hall of Famer, Bland has established himself as one of the most accomplished and respected coaches in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) history.
Bland became a full-time head coach in 2017, marking a turning point for the program as the Lady Panthers quickly emerged as a conference contender. That season, Prairie View A&M doubled its win total from the previous year, and Bland earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors.
Since then, Bland has guided Prairie View A&M to sustained success, including SWAC Championships in 2018, 2022, and 2023, along with multiple NCAA Regional appearances. The 2019 season marked the program’s first 30-win campaign, setting a new standard for success.
Championship Success & Historic Seasons
The Lady Panthers have remained a dominant force in the SWAC under Bland’s leadership. In 2023, Prairie View A&M captured the SWAC Western Division title, won the SWAC Championship, and set a conference record with 23 league victories. Bland was named SWAC Co-Coach of the Year.
The success continued in 2024 as Prairie View A&M repeated as SWAC Western Division champions, with Bland earning SWAC Coach of the Year honors. In 2025, the Lady Panthers once again claimed the Western Division title, while Bland was recognized as SWAC Coach of the Year and HBCU Coach of the Year for his outstanding leadership.
One of the most remarkable seasons in program history came in 2022, when the Lady Panthers rebounded from an 0-19 start to capture the SWAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Regionals, cementing one of the most memorable turnarounds in conference history.
National Competitiveness
Under Bland’s leadership, Prairie View A&M has competed successfully against programs from across the country, earning notable victories over teams from major conferences, including the Big 12 and Sun Belt, further elevating the program’s national profile.
Postseason Excellence, Player Development & Recent Standouts
Bland has consistently developed high-level talent, with Prairie View A&M producing a steady stream of All-SWAC honorees over the past three seasons. From 2023 through 2025, the Lady Panthers have featured multiple first-team and second-team All-SWAC selections, along with major award winners including a SWAC Newcomer of the Year and key All-Tournament performers during championship runs.
In 2023, Prairie View A&M placed several student-athletes on the All-SWAC teams, highlighted by standout offensive and pitching performances that fueled the program’s conference-record 23 wins. Key contributors posted strong offensive numbers at the plate while the pitching staff delivered critical innings throughout the championship run, with multiple players earning All-Tournament recognition.
The 2024 season continued that trend, as Prairie View A&M once again saw top performers recognized among the conference’s elite. Impact hitters led the team in batting average, extra-base hits, and RBIs, while the pitching staff ranked among the conference leaders in wins and innings pitched, helping secure another division title and Coach of the Year honors for Bland.
In 2025, the Lady Panthers maintained their standard of excellence with another group of All-SWAC performers leading the way. The roster featured experienced upperclassmen and emerging standouts who contributed across the lineup and in the circle, reinforcing Prairie View A&M’s reputation as one of the SWAC’s premier programs. Bland’s ability to recruit, develop, and elevate student-athletes has remained a cornerstone of the program’s sustained success, as evidenced by consistent all-conference recognition and postseason achievements.
