Vernon Bland enters his 15th season overall with the Lady Panthers as the all-time winningest head softball coach in program history at Prairie View A&M University, totaling 278 career victories. A proud Prairie View A&M alumnus and PVAMU Baseball Hall of Famer, Bland has established himself as one of the most accomplished and respected coaches in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) history.
Bland has guided the Lady Panthers to three SWAC Championships (2018, 2022, 2023), including three consecutive conference titles from 2022–24, while earning multiple SWAC Coach of the Year honors. Prior to being elevated to head coach before the 2012 season, he served two years as an assistant, making the current campaign his 15th total season with the softball program.
Championship Dominance & Historic Seasons
The 2024 season stands as one of the most dominant in conference history, as Prairie View posted a 23-1 SWAC record, the most conference wins ever recorded in SWAC softball, surpassing the program’s previous mark of 22-2 set in 2023. Bland led the Lady Panthers to a West Division title and their third consecutive SWAC Championship.
On May 6, 2024, Bland was named SWAC Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Camise Patterson of Florida A&M University, after guiding Prairie View to one of the most successful seasons in conference history.
The program continued its dominance in 2025, as the Lady Panthers captured the SWAC Western Division Championship, further reinforcing Prairie View’s standing as a perennial conference power. Bland again was named SWAC Coach of the Year.
National Recognition & Professional Coaching
Bland’s excellence has extended beyond the conference level. He was honored as a 2025 HBCU Sports Coach of the Year, recognizing his sustained success, leadership, and impact on the national HBCU softball landscape.
In addition to his collegiate success, Bland was named an assistant coach for the Texas Smoke, the reigning champions of the Women's Fastpitch League. The league, launched in 2024, is currently the only professional softball league in the United States, featuring four elite teams.
The Texas Smoke opened the 2025 season on June 20, beginning their title defense after capturing the league championship, further highlighting Bland’s growing influence at both the collegiate and professional levels of the sport.
Postseason Excellence & Player Development
During the 2023 postseason, Prairie View placed five student-athletes on the All-SWAC teams, led by SWAC Newcomer of the Year Aerin Talley. Talley earned second-team All-SWAC honors at third base, while Mia Nunez (outfield) and Jerrica Rojas (pitcher) were also recognized. Bivian Figueroa (catcher) and Cailin Massey (pitcher) earned All-SWAC First Team honors.
Massey, Talley, Audrey Garcia, and SWAC Tournament MVP Rojas were named to the SWAC All-Tournament Team, as the Lady Panthers advanced to their third NCAA Regional appearance, competing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana against No. 10 LSU.
A Cinderella Championship Run
One of the defining moments of Bland’s tenure came during the 2022 season, when the Lady Panthers rebounded from an 0-19 start to finish 20-30 overall (16-8 SWAC) and capture the SWAC Championship, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The run remains one of the most remarkable championship stories in conference history.
