PRIOR TO PVAMU: In Smith, the Panthers have a piece that's expected to pay dividends later on down the line. She averaged 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds as a key reserve for the Tyler Junior College Apaches, who advanced to the NJCAA Region XIV tournament and had earned a national tournament berth

"Gerlyn is a super-athletic player who can play the two, three or four," Pugh said. "She's going to be something of a gray shirt for us this season." 

Smith is a 6-1 guard from Miramar HS in Miramar, Fla. that was named as a Honorable Mention player her junior year and is the first girls basketball player to attend a D-I school in five years.  Smith averaged 18 points, 5.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game her junior season.
 
"Gerlyn is a versatile guard that can play the one, two, three, and maybe some four by time she finishes her collegiate career," Pugh said.  "She's left handed and a phenomenal athlete.  She's definitely a dynamic scorer for this level.  I think her athleticism is superior to our league, and she has the ability to be as good as she wants to be and go to the next level.  Her size as a guard, along with her being an incredible person will fit right in to this program.  We are excited about the athleticism that she will bring to our system."
