Shelton enters his 1st season as an assistant coach for Prairie View A&M. He comes to the Hill as the owner of the College Basketball Scouting Service Called the “Texas Prep Report” from 2020-2023.
Shelton has had prior stops at Ranger, Panola, and Garden City Community Colleges where he was named to Silver Waves Media's “Top 50 Impactful Junior College Coaches”.
During the 2015-2017 season, Shelton served as the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of North Texas, where he signed all conference USA guards Ryan Woolridge, Jeremy Combs, and North Texas’s only McDonald’s All-American Keith Frazier.
Prior to working in North Texas, Shelton was the head boys’ basketball coach at Haltom High School for three years. Before Haltom, Shelton was the head coach at Gatesville High School (Waco Area) where he led the Fightin’ Hornets to a 2011 playoff appearance, and a district runner-up finish to LaVega High School, which held an undefeated record during the regular season.
Before Gatesville, Shelton worked in Fort Worth ISD from 2007-10.
During the 2005-2006 season, Shelton worked in the front office for the Cleveland Cavaliers. His duties included scouting, preparing Intel for the 2006 NBA Draft, and assisting general managers Danny Ferry, Chris Grant, Lance Blanks, and Michael Winger (Washington Wizards). The Cavaliers compiled a record of 50-32 and made the playoffs for the first time in ten years.
Shelton began his coaching career in Crowley ISD under North Crowley's head coach Tom Brakel. During the 2005-2009, Shelton coached with the Dallas Showtyme AAU basketball program.
Shelton holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Wesleyan University, where he also played basketball. He also holds a master’s degree in special education from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. During his stint at SJU, he served as a graduate assistant for the men’s basketball team, where they made the NCAA Tournament during the 2001-02 season.
