Toby Cornejo joined the Prairie View A&M University baseball coaching staff in September 2025 as an Assistant Coach, bringing with him a proven record of success in player development, program building, and competitive excellence across multiple levels of collegiate baseball.
A native of Kansas, Cornejo began his collegiate playing career at Hutchinson Community College (2010–2012), where he quickly became a key piece of the Blue Dragons program. As a freshman, he helped guide Hutchinson to a third-place finish at the 2010 Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. By his sophomore season, he had earned All-Conference honors, anchoring a defense that helped the Blue Dragons capture the Jayhawk West regular-season championship.
Following his time at Hutchinson, Cornejo continued his career at Northwestern State University and later at Emporia State University, where he helped lead the Hornets to an MIAA Championship and an NCAA Regional berth. His leadership, consistency, and strong baseball IQ made him a respected figure on and off the diamond.
After concluding his playing career, Cornejo transitioned into coaching, accepting an assistant role at Coffeyville Community College (2013–2016). Working primarily with infielders and hitters, he helped rejuvenate the Red Ravens program, which earned its first Region VI Tournament appearance in five years under his guidance in 2016.
In 2017, Cornejo returned to his alma mater, Hutchinson Community College, where he served as an assistant coach for seven seasons. During his tenure, the Blue Dragons achieved five Top-20 national finishes, and his focus on player development produced outstanding results:
- Four Gold Glove-winning infielders
- Six NJCAA All-Americans
- One NJCAA National Player of the Year
- One of the top offensive units in junior college baseball
Cornejo’s emphasis on fundamentals, situational execution, and plate discipline helped establish Hutchinson as one of the premier programs in the country.
In 2023, Cornejo was named the inaugural Head Baseball Coach at Southeast Arkansas College (SEARK), where he built the program from the ground up. His leadership was immediately impactful—guiding the Sharks to 33 wins in their first season, followed by 36 victories in year two, and leading SEARK to its first regional tournament appearance in its first year of postseason eligibility. Under his direction, SEARK became known for its aggressive offensive approach, disciplined defense, and competitive edge.
Now at Prairie View A&M University, Cornejo brings his deep knowledge of the game, developmental expertise, and championship mindset to the Panthers’ program. His experience across the junior college and four-year levels, combined with his passion for mentoring student-athletes, makes him a valuable addition to the Prairie View A&M baseball coaching staff and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) community.
Throughout his career—whether as a player, assistant, or head coach—Cornejo has demonstrated a consistent ability to elevate programs, cultivate talent, and inspire excellence on and off the field.
