PV Soccer Predicted To Finish First, Arguelles Voted Defense Player Of The Year

Prairie View A&M was predicted to finish first, and defender Debbie Arguelles was named the Preseason Southwestern Athletic Conference Defender of the year on Thursday afternoon. The SWAC released its preseason all-conference soccer team, with Prairie View A&M getting 14 first place votes in the predicted order of finish.

The Lady Panthers were represented on the All-SWAC First Team with senior midfielder Katherine Sheppard and Arguelles holding down the defender position. Arguelles played in 19 games with the Lady Panthers. She finished the season with a .667 SOG percentage.  Arguelles was a two-time defender of the week and was critical on a defense that finished fourth in the league in goals allowed (2.11 goals allowed per game). She earned a 2012 Second-Team All SWAC selection. She also earned a 2012 College Sports Madness All-SWAC First Team selection as a defender.

Sheppard ended the 2012 season with one goal and four assists. She made the SWAC All-Tournament Team for a second-consecutive year with her 2012 selection, finishing the year with six points. As an attacking midfielder, Sheppard took 16 shots with seven shots on goal (.438 SOG percentage). She was also voted to the College Sports Madness All-SWAC First Team for the 2012 season.

The Lady Panthers were represented on the second team by the sophomore tandem of defender Breanna Powell and forward Arianna Rountree. Rountree finished the season with a total of five goals and a .647 SOG average. With two assists on the season, Rountree finished 2012 with 12 points in her freshman campaign (second on the team).

Senior forward Angie Guillory, who finished tied for fourth in the league with 16 points last season and made two-consecutive post-season All-SWAC First Teams as a forward , did not make the final cut in the preseason poll. However, in the College Sports Madness Preseason Poll, Guillory was voted in as a first teamer, along with Arguelles. Carly Detter made the College Sports Madness Second Team as a defender.
