First Half Run Seals Fate For Prairie View In Loss To Baylor

GAME BOX SCORE

WACO, Texas – Prairie View A&M ran into a buzz saw on Monday night as nationally ranked Baylor University stormed out to a huge first half lead en route to handing the Panthers a 90-45 loss at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor went up 10-2 within the first three minutes of the contest until a three-pointer by Jeff Wherry trimmed Prairie View's deficit to 10-5 at the 16:45 mark. A dunk by Baylor's Quincy Acy upped Baylor's margin to 12-5 but the Panthers hung close with 14:34 left on Duwan Kornegay's layup for a 13-7 margin.

From that point, the tide of the game turned as Baylor went on a 14-0 run midway through the half to claim a 26-7 lead. Plagued by poor shooting from the field (5-of-26), the Panthers never recovered offensively after the run as they were outscored 21-9 entering halftime en route to a 47-15 deficit.

Baylor remained hot in the second half as they shot 51.5 percent from the field and continued to build on its lead. The Panthers doubled their shooting performance in the second stanza but it was too little too late as Baylor's first-half margin was too much to overcome.

Trant Simpson led Prairie View A&M with 10 points. Kornegay and Jeff Wherry tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven while Brandon Webb added nine points.

Prairie View returns to action on Wednesday as they'll face TCU in Fort Worth at 7 p.m.
