UAPB Squeaks Past Prairie View In Double OT

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Prairie View A&M missed an opportunity to gain an important road win as Arkansas-Pine Bluff pulled out a 90-85 double overtime victory on Monday night on the campus of UAPB.

Down by one at halftime, Prairie View rolled up its sleeves and went to work as the half featured five ties and nine lead changes. Prairie View would claim its largest margin of the half at 47-42 at the 14:02 mark following a trey by Cortney Bell. UAPB reclaimed the lead three minutes later via an 8-0 run but Prairie View bounced back and moved on top 54-52 after a layup from Brandon Webb. From that point, neither team would pull away until Prairie View moved ahead by two at 67-65 with 2:47 remaining after two free throws from Mike Webb. UAPB answered with a layup on the following possession but Prairie View's Trant Simpson nailed two free throws to give PV a 69-67 margin with 2:02 left on the clock.

PV had an opportunity to make it a two-possession contest with less than a minute remaining but missed four opportunities from the charity stripe. UAPB's Daniel Broughton rebounded the missed free throw with 41 seconds left and Savalance Townsend tied the contest at 69 with a jumper as the clock read 26 seconds. PV missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession which forced overtime.

The Panthers led for nearly the entire overtime period until UAPB's Ricky Parks moved UAPB ahead 79-78 after hitting a putback with two seconds left. PV's Michael Webb was fouled with seven-tenths of a second left and hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to force a second overtime.

PV led briefly in the second overtime as Duwan Kornegay scored off his own offensive rebound with 3:18 remaining. However, UAPB's Allen Smith nailed two free throws which gave UAPB an 82-81 advantage and the lead for good as PV would draw no closer than one point the remainder of the contest.

Simpson had a monster game with 30 points and five assists while Michael Webb and Cortney Bell both chipped in with 10 points and three blocks each. Brandon Webb led PV with eight rebounds.

The Panthers return to play on Saturday as they host Alabama State at 7:30 p.m. in Prairie View.
