Dominique Smith notched a double-double performance with 17 points and 12 rebounds as Prairie View A&M cruised to a 59-36 win over Alabama State on Saturday evening at the William J. Nicks Building.
The Lady Panthers clicked on all cylinders to begin the first half as they shot 60 percent from the field (13-of-21) to take control early on. Prairie View held a 30-20 advantage at the half as Smith accounted for five points during a 7-1 run which built a 10-point cushion.
Prairie View's 10-point lead would be cut to eight (32-24) to open the second half as Tanika Jackson knocked down consecutive free-throws after being fouled on a driving attempt to the basket with 17:32 remaining. However, the Lady Panthers would hold Alabama State to just two points during a seven-minute span which allowed Prairie View to assemble a 10-2 spurt giving them a 50-29 lead with under six minutes to play.
The Lady Panthers would go on and cruise to the finish line as they kept their foot on the gas pedal. Two free throws from Smith with 1:22 remaining led to Prairie View's largest lead of the evening at 23 points as the Lady Panthers upped their record to 10-9 overall on the season and 6-2 in conference play.
The Lady Panthers return to the hardwood as they'll host Alabama A&M on Monday, Jan. 31 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
