Lady Panthers Blow Past Alabama A&M WIth Second-Half Spurt

Henry Leads The Charge With 18 Points

The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers went on a 21-4 spurt to open the second half which allowed them to blow past Alabama A&M 68-49 on Monday evening at the William J. Nicks Building.

“We jumped out to a slow start but played sound defense which created our offense,” said head coach Toyelle Wilson. “Our bench was huge in tonight's win as Sharde Henry played amazing on both ends of the floor.”

Alabama A&M raced out from the tip to claim an early 13-4 advantage by shooting a sizzling 5-of-7 from the field to jumpstart the contest. However, the Lady Panthers would regroup as Sharde Henry knocked down a three-pointer which ignited a 10-3 run that cut the deficit to 16-15 at the 8:10 mark.

The Lady Panthers seized the opportunity as momentum was in their favor from that point. They claimed the lead for the first time all game after a slashing layup from senior Dominique Smith bumped the margin to 19-18 with under five minutes to play in the half. Prairie View's edge wouldn't hold long though as the Bulldogs managed to confine the Lady Panthers to just four points over the remainder of the period as AAMU led 26-23 at the break.

The Lady Panthers dominated the second stanza from start to finish as they scored the first eight points of the half en route to a 33-26 lead with 17:41 remaining. Prairie View A&M followed with yet another flurry by using a team effort as Robin Jones, Sharde Henry, Siarra Soliz and Whitney Williams all contributed buckets during a game-changing 18-2 run to claim a 21-point margin with 9:16 to play.

Moreover, Prairie View continued to pour it on its opposition as the lead grew to as large as 25 points on multiple occasions. The outmanned Lady Bulldogs tried to hang around as Brittney Strikland knocked down a trey in the closing minute of play to bring them within 19 but they were unable to come any closer as the Lady Panthers advanced to 11-9 on the season and 7-2 in conference.

Sophomore Sharde Henry led the charge scoring 18 points while pulling down eight rebounds and four steals. Robin Jones tallied 17 points and nine rebounds while Siarra Soliz added 13 points, one rebound and two steals.

The Lady Panthers return to the hardwood in a highly-anticipated matchup against rival Texas Southern on Saturday, Feb. 5 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the H&PE Arena on the campus of TSU.
